    Monument of Remembrance

The Monument of Remembrance, also known as Gëlle Fra, was opened in 1923 as a memorial dedicated to all the citizens who volunteered during World War I. Situated in Constitution Square, it stands as a 21 meter-tall obelisk, and features a bronze statue of the Greek goddess of victory, Nike, dramatically holding out a wreath. Two other figures at the foot of the obelisk represent the soldiers of Luxembourg; one is dead, and the other is mourning his compatriot. This statue strongly conveys the sense of sadness and loss felt by the people of Luxembourg during the war, whilst still representing the freedom which rises up through the misery and pain. It is an enthralling and thought-provoking monument to visit whilst in the city. The Monument of Remembrance is a war memorial in Luxembourg City. It is dedicated to the thousands of Luxembourgers who volunteered for service in the armed forces of the Allied Powers during World War I. When Luxembourg was occupied by Nazi forces in World War II, the Germans dismantled the memorial in October 1940. Several portions of the memorial were rescued, and after the war, the monument was partially restored. Later additions were made to honour Luxembourger forces who had served in World War II and the Korean War.

Among historic monuments in Luxembourg, the Golden Lady on Constitution Square was set up in 1923 to commemorate the Luxembourgers who perished in the First World War. The memorial represents a gold-plated female figure on a stone obelisk. On October, 20th, 1940 the Nazis pulled the monument down; only in 1984 did extensive restoration give it back its original appearance. Today it symbolizes freedom and resistance for the Luxembourg people.

Notre Dame Cathedral (Cathedrale Notre Dame)

Like its French counterpart, the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Luxembourg is an eye-catching edifice. Constructed between 1613 and 1621, the Notre-Dame Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame) is the only cathedral in all of Luxembourg.

    Equestrian Statue of William II

Among the famous statues in Luxembourg-City, this bronze statue was set up on William Square to pay tribute to the King and Grand Duke William II of Nassau-Orange. The bronze statue of William 11, designed by Mercié in 1884, pays tribute to the King and Grand Duke William 11 of Nassau-Orange, reminding us of the inter-connection between Luxembourg and the Netherlands. He ruled from 1840-1849 and, one year before his death, granted the Grand Duchy its first parliamentary constitution, one of the most liberal in Europe at the time. The riding figure of William II is the work of the French sculptor Antonin Mercié; the statue of the horse is by Victor Peter.
